EDITOR'S NOTE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FOIBLES and FALACIES Department: Issue number 21 (July 1989) has a major problem. The pages of the family group sheets are all out of order. I am quite certain that this is the result of the people at the copy shop getting the pages messed up while separating them to do double sided copy. I will include with this issue copies of all the group sheets in that issue that had pages in the wrong order. These are the group sheets for Vermont Henry Loop (file RI.FGSV), his sons Henry (file RIHE.FGSV) and Daniel (file RIDA.FGSV) and his grandson Almond (file RIHEAL.FGSV). Secondly, in the April, 1988, issue, in the chapter on Ludwig Lupp I claimed that Christian Lupp, Jr., was the son of Ludwig's son Christian. As you will find in this issue, this is almost certainly untrue. Subscription rates are $15 for one year, four issues July, October, January and April. The next volume will be Numbers 21 through 24. If you are retired on a fixed income and would find the $15 to be a hardship, you may subscribe for $5, as in the past. Please make checks payable to Victor L. Bennison. I CANNOT cash checks made out to the Loop Scoop. (c) Victor L. Bennison, 1990 ****************************** ARTICLE ********************************* The Family of Peter H. Loop Victor L. Bennison [A draft of a chapter from "The Early Loop Family in America", in preparation, (c) 1990] Peter H. LOOP [Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the third child of Ensign Henry LOOP and Nelly SHARP was born on August 7, 1767 and christened, October 21, 1767, at Schagticoke, Rennselaer County, New York. He was not christened with a middle name or initial, but probably adopted the custom (common in the Loop family) of using the initial of his father's first name as his own middle initial. He married about 1790, possibly at Schoharie, Rebecca GILBERT. She was born about 1772. Their first child was born in 1792 in Hadley, Saratoga county, NY. In 1800 they were censused in Washington county. Sometime near 1806 they moved to Johnstown, Montgomery county, NY, where they were censused in 1810. About 1813, they moved again, this time to Cayuga County. There at Auburn, in 1813, Peter H. Loop enlisted in Captain Armstrong's Company of Col. Brown's 23rd Regiment of Infantry for service in the War of 1812. His service in this unit is clouded. In the affidavit he filed at age 83 seeking a land bounty for his service, he claims he was left sick along a road in St. Lawrence County, NY, that he was reported as dead, and that that is why he never received his discharge. An official investigating his application, however, found that Peter had been reported, not as dead, but as having deserted. The land bounty was denied. Family tradition says Peter H. Loop moved his family to Ohio shortly after the War of 1812. By the 1820 census, they had settled in Clermont County, Ohio. Around 1828 they moved to Perrysburg, Wood county, Ohio, where several of the children married and settled, and where his son James drowned in the Maumee River. Between 1830 and 1840 Peter moved to Woodville, Sandusky county, Ohio. Rebecca died April 9, 1841, probably in Woodville. Peter H. Loop died June 9, 1855, and is buried in at the cemetery in Woodville. His tombstone inscription reads: Peter Loop, Jr., Pvt NY Militia, Rev War, 1766 - 1855 But this stone was clearly erected long after his death, probably by some organization, and the information on the stone is entirely erroneous. Jacob LOOP [Peter(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the first child of Peter H. LOOP and Rebecca GILBERT was born September 18, 1792, at Hadley, Saratoga, NY. He moved with his family to Johnstown, Montgomery County, NY, about 1806, and there served a seven year apprenticeship with a printer. He abandoned that trade when he moved with is family to Cayuga County, NY, about 1813. There he married his first wife, Nancy FROST, on February 15, 1815. He became a part owner and operator of a wool carding, dyeing, and cloth dressing mill. He was inducted into the order of Free and Accepted Masons at Throopville. About 1824 he moved his family to Wayne County, NY, where they were censused in 1830. In 1835 they moved to Pontiac, Oakland County, Michigan. There he farmed until 1858, when they moved again, this time to Lake Township, Wood County, Ohio, where they were censused near his brother Phillip in 1860. In 1861 he made his final move, to Shiawassee County, Michigan. He purchased a farm in Bennington on the town line road between Bennington and Owosso. His first wife died between 1860 and 1870. His funeral services were held at the Maple River Baptist Church. "The concourse of Masonic brethren and neighbors was larger than could enter the house." The burial itself was performed by the Knights Templar Masonic Order, of which he had been a member. The children of Jacob LOOP and Nancy FROST were: 1. James LOOP, b. January, 1816, in New York, m. Susan A. whose surname may have been HOTCHKISS. She was born about 1830 in MI. They are censused in 1850 in Pontiac, Oakland County, MI, in the household of Joseph HOTCHKISS, age 23, born MI. His occupation is given as farmer. In 1860, James is living, without his wife, in his father's household. 2. Jacob LOOP, Jr., b. about 1819 in New York. He was not married in 1850 or 1860, and may never have married. In both censuses he is living with his parents, and no occupation is given for him. Perhaps he was disabled or mentally ill. 3. George Clinton LOOP, b. about 1824 in New York. He was living with his parents in 1860, listed as a farmer, with almost as much property as his father. In 1870 he is enumerated as the head of household, with his parents still living with him. He probably never married. 4. Deborah LOOP. Omer Loop's records show this child. 5. Lana Ann LOOP. Omer Loop's records show this child. Henry LOOP [Peter(6), Henry(5), Christian(4), Jacob(3), Sebastian(2), Anthony(1)] the second child of Peter H. Before 1850, they moved to a farm of 160 acres in Greentown, Howard County, Indiana, just three miles east of Kokomo. There Elizabeth died of "paralicy" in April, 1850. After his wife's death Henry spent a year in the California gold fields. He returned to Kokomo, where he married Elizabeth, the widow of Mr. POOL, on November 8, 1855, in Grant County, Indiana. He probably moved with his parents to Cayuga County, New York, in 1813. When his parents moved to Ohio, he stayed behind in Mentz Township, Cayuga County, with his brother Jacob. It was probably there that he married, in December, 1823, Betsy E. BENJAMIN. She was born about October 12, 1800 in Vermont. In 1830 they were living in Mentz Township with their three children. By 1840 they had moved to Middletown Township, Wood County, Ohio. His parents had already moved from there to Woodville in Sandusky County, Ohio. By 1850 Jediah and Betsy also had moved to Woodville. LOOP to his sister Margaret (LOOP) PITMAN dated January 1, 1928: "In the month of September 1853, in two covered wagons we moved from Preble County, Ohio, to Howard County, Indiana. Elijah Loop was an infant in Mother's arms. The writer of this was seven year old. Though seventy-five years ago every detail in leaving a pleasant home rushes before me. Grandmother's orchard, our dear little schoolmates who bid us good by with tears streaming from our eyes, with words that we were going so far away that we would never see each other again. Our tears seemed to multiply when we landed in the wilderness 1 1/4 miles North of Greentown, Howard county, Indiana. Though many years have passed, I see the two covered wagons moving slowly away as our heart break almost at the parting scene. Our black and white spotted cow, Barney by name, hitched to the hindmost wagon not acting in a friendly manner, rather unwilling to be led like an animal to slaughter. This cow in our young lives had an important part to play in settling and nourishing a large family in a new country. Every morning and evening, Mother would milk Barney, and our chief feed was mush and milk, always for our evening meal. Long years after living in our adopted house mush and milk played a great part in giving us children health and rosy cheeks. Barney lived with us a long time and when she left us by death, great floods of tears flowed from every eye in our large family. She served us well." The following is excerpted from the Biographical and Genealogical History of Cass, Miami, Howard, and Tipton Counties, Indiana, 1898: Joseph Marsh Loop in his boyhood days received a limited education in the subscription schools of the frontier district in which he lived, and his earliest recollections are of working in the clearing and helping to cultivate the crops. As he grew older he became expert in the use of the ax. There was no one in the whole settlement who could split more rails in a day than he could. He also learned to make half-bushel measures of wood, and at this he worked more or less for forty years... After marriage Mr. and Mrs. [Joseph Marsh] Loop settled on a tract of seventeen acres of land in Preble county, purchased with money she received as her portion of her father's estate, and there they lived for thirteen years. Their next move was to Howard county, Indiana, when this county was for the most part covered with primitive forest. Selecting a location a mile and a half north of Greentown, Mr. Loop entered eighty acres of government land, from which he cleared the timber and to which he has from time to time added until he now has a fine farm of four hundred acres, under a high state of cultivation and with first-class buildings and other improvements thereon... Mr. Loop assisted largely in building the United Brethren house of worship at Greentown and is liberal in his support of the organization. Politically he is a republican. Mr. Loop has many pleasant reminiscences of his pioneer life, and has both an instructive and entertaining way of relating them. He died July 4, 1898, at Deer Creek, Carroll County, IN, apparently a suicide. According to the report in the Hoosier Democrat, "Dr. Loop of Deer Creek, who has been addicted to the opium habit for years, died Wednesday from the effect of a dose of this drug; taken presumably with suicidal intent. He was found in a stupor at his home Monday afternoon and Dr Planke was called, and later Dr. Loop of Kokomo, a brother of the deceased physician was summoned, but they could do nothing to revive him. We learn that he had injected cocaine into his arm and had then swallowed a combination of opiates. Every effort to rouse him was in vain and after a sleep of forty-eight hours, during which he was in convulsions, he died Wednesday at 2 o'clock." His widow remarried to James W. CRETCHER. Vola Carter asks if the line from Henry Loop (who married Amy Dikeman) back to Anthony Lupp in Germany is a sound line. Unfortunately no. The only weakness in the line is the link between his father "Vermont" Henry Loop and Ensign Henry Loop. We lack proof that "Vermont" Henry is Ensign Henry's son. If you read the July, 1989, issue of the Scoop again, you will see that there is a fair amount of circumstantial evidence that supports this possibility, but not enough to constitute a proof. Vola, thanks for pointing out the problem with Almond H. Loop's family group sheet, and thanks for the copy of his will, abstracted above [Vital Data #1]. 2. Vital Data #2 represents a possible new lead in the search for the origins of Christian Loop of Westmoreland County, PA. Note that the wife's maiden name might be Olinger. 3. Vital Data #3 finally proves that Peter C. Loop, son of Capt. Peter Loop's son Christian, was married to Margaret (Peggy) Huey, daughter of Abraham Huey, and that they lived in Dauphin County at one time. They later appear in Steuben County, NY. 4. Vital Data #4 through #6 show an unmarried Mary Loop/Lupp giving birth to three children and perhaps loosing one in 1828. 5. Vital Data #8 yields us some new information. First of all, notice the Esther Keckler serving as a sponsor in January and May of 1793 for Peter Keckler and Anna Maria and also for Valentine Burger and his wife Elizabeth. She disappears as Esther Keckler, but in April, 1794, Esther and Anthony Lupp have their first child. And in subsequent baptisms of their children, who should serve as their sponsors but Peter Keckler and Maria and also Valentine Burger and Elizabeth. So Anthony Lupp's wife Esther is clearly Esther Keckler. Secondly, in one of the baptisms, Anthony Lupp Sr., and his wife Susannah serve as sponsors. This is the first real source showing that the two Anthony Lupp's of Adams County were father and son. Thirdly, notice that Jacob LUPP and Anthony's daughter Margaret (Lupp) Wehr, both use Nicholas Burger and his wife Anna Maria as sponsors. Later, Valentine Burger and his wife appear in the same baptismal records with Anthony Lupp and Esther Keckler. This may not prove much but it does tie together Margaret, Jacob, and Anthony in day to day life. One final thing to notice: Remember that Ludwig Lupp who lived in the next county and was a first cousin of Anthony, married as his third wife (1796), a Catherine Peters, and Anthony's wife was a widow Susanna Peter, and Anthony and Susanna are sponsors for Ulrich Peter and his wife Catherine. I would say that there is some possibility that the Catherine Peter who married Ludwig was Ulrich's widow. Ludwig was 63 years old at the time of his marriage. 6. Vital Data #9 is an exciting find. This is the birth record for the first child of Philip LUPP, son of Ludwig. Note that the mother of this child is named Catherine. Philip is said to have had three wives, but the names of the first two are not known. Now it looks like the first wife was named Catherine like the last wife. 7. Vital Data #10 proves that Christian LUPP, also a son of Ludwig, did not have a child Christian LUPP, Jr. Since his will was probated in 1789, I previously assumed that that is when he died and that he was the father of Christian LUPP, Jr., who was born in 1788. But he died in 1785. In his will, that year, he leaves his estate to his wife and his unborn child. This child was named Christina LUPP, Jr., after her mother. The probate records specifically call her his "daughter", so it is not just a misreading of Christian LUPP, Jr. I am now willing to admit that Christian LUPP, Jr., is probably the child of Philip LUPP, who named his son in honor of his dead brother. 8. George Capes asks how Catherine Loop and Barent Denny (her husband) fit into the Loop family tree. I am reasonably certain that Catherine is Christian Loop's daughter Catherine. I'm talking about Christian son of Jacob Lupp son of Sebastion Lupp son of Anthony Lupp of Bach. Christian's daughter Jennetje Loop was a sponsor at the christening of one of Barent and Catherine's children at the Reformed Church in Claverack. Christian Loop's son Peter christened many of his children at the same church. This is all circumstantial, but I think reasonably convincing.
